The pepper trade, in a minute
In 2017, Indians made about one billion UPI payments in a whole year. By 2020, that number was twelve billion. In 2022, it was forty-six billion. And in 2024, it crossed one hundred and thirty billion. Few payment systems anywhere have ever climbed that fast. Today you can pay with it in Singapore, the UAE, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Why did it grow so fast? Scale. In the 2011 census, Uttar Pradesh alone had almost two hundred million people. Maharashtra had one hundred and twelve million, Bihar one hundred and four million, and West Bengal ninety-one million. Every one of them became a possible payer the day a phone could send money in two seconds. So the next time you scan a QR code for a cup of chai, remember: you are part of one of the biggest numbers in the world.
